Presbyopia edition of BCLA research project due to be published

A “pioneering” BCLA global consensus report will deliver evidence-based guidance to eye care professionals on all aspects of presbyopia and its management – shaping the future of patient care for years to come.

BCLA CLEAR™ Presbyopia will be published in the forthcoming edition of the ‘Contact Lens and Anterior Eye’ (CLAE) journal and will feature work from panels of globally respected experts in the field.

It will build on the impact of the first BCLA CLEAR™ issue published in April 2021, which focussed on contact lenses and has proved an essential reference point for contact lens care, research and guidance across the world.

Luke Stevens-Burt, chief executive of the BCLA, said: “The BCLA CLEAR™ project has been an incredible collaboration, and we look forward to publishing a body of work that we are confident will become a blueprint for the management of presbyopia, globally.

“These papers and the follow-on resources we produce will be invaluable for eye care professionals, giving them easy access to an amazing body of research, analysis and data and will ultimately prove to be of huge benefit to patients.

“This research will allow us to form a global consensus on contact lens practice where ECPs can see which information is evidence-based, researchers can identify gaps in current knowledge and industry can determine what still needs to be achieved.

“We are incredibly grateful for the funding received from Alcon, Bausch + Lomb, CooperVision, and Johnson and Johnson Vision that has made this project a reality. This funding will enable us to publish the research and develop other resources to improve dissemination.”

BCLA CLEAR™ Presbyopia will feature eight overview papers, each compiled by a panel chaired by internationally renowned experts.  The topic areas and panel chairs are:

1. BCLA CLEAR™ Presbyopia - panel chairs
2. Mechanism and Optics- Leon Davies
3. Epidemiology and Impact - Maria Markoulli
4. Evaluation and diagnosis - James Wolffsohn
5. Management of Spectacles with Contact Lenses - Philip Morgan
6. Management with Corneal Techniques - Jennifer Craig
7. Management with Scleral and Pharmaceutical Techniques - Shehzad Naroo
