BCLA Statement: Published 2 June 2023

Recent published reports have linked the use of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in contact lenses to long-term health concerns. The BCLA continually monitors and evaluates emerging research and science in the field of contact lenses and contact lens materials, and has requested more detailed evidence from authors of these reports. In the absence of clear evidence the BCLA still considers contact lenses safe, when worn and cared for according to recommendations by a contact lens practitioner. Contact lenses have for decades demonstrated to be a safe and reliable option for vision correction, providing millions of people worldwide with clear and comfortable sight.
