BCLA UK Highlights: Can diabetics be successful with contact lenses and should I prescribe?

Eye care professionals attending BCLA UK  will be able to learn more about contact lens innovations to help with the management of ocular and systemic disease.
The session, led by Dr Clare O’Donnell (pictured), will help delegates get a better understanding of the secondary anterior ocular manifestations of common ocular and systemic diseases and answer key questions such as:

• Can diabetics be successful with contact lens and should I prescribe?
• Ocular hypertension; is this a barrier to contact lens wear?

The lecture will raise awareness of the possible adverse effects of contemporary treatment regimes on anterior ocular structure and function and allow eye care professionals to appreciate the possible impact of common conditions and treatments on contact lens wear.

Clare O’Donnell said: “Over the past decade or so, there have been published studies documenting the response of such eyes to newer contact lens modalities.
“The results of these studies suggest that contact lenses can be a viable mode of refractive correction for patients affected by many ocular and systemic diseases.
“The purpose of this talk is to review the literature on the anterior ocular manifestations of ocular and systemic disease, particularly those pertaining to contact lens wear.”
The talk will be held as part of a series of CET lectures during BCLAUK – a new event aimed at boosting eye care professionals’ confidence with contact lenses and maximising the potential of both themselves and their practice.
