Pioneers Lecture: Lifting the Lid on Soft Contact Lens Design
Dr Graeme Young

A look ahead to imminent innovations in soft lens design will form the highlight of BCLA’s Visionaries event, providing a sneak peek into an exciting future.
Dr Graeme Young (pictured), Managing Director of Visioncare Research Ltd, will give this year’s Pioneers lecture, helping to lift the lid on contact lens design and allow delegates the chance to see what lies ahead in the months and years to come. He said: “Soft contact lenses have improved to such an extent that we take for granted most fittings will be trouble-free.  This has come about through gradual improvements in lens design, precision manufacturing and accumulated experience.

“Does this mean that contact lens fitting has been de-skilled?  Has the technology developed more or less as far as it can?”  The presentation will review the finer points of soft contact lens design, drawing on recent findings from OCT studies, computer modelling, and clinical trials. These studies give new insights into how contact lenses work and the relationship between soft lens design and fit.
The lecture will turn the clock back as far as 1801 to feature the work of some of the pioneers of ocular topography while also looking to the future to review forthcoming innovations in soft lens design, with our former president revealing it is ‘an exciting time to be a hydrophilphile’.

Dr Graeme Young's lecture offers 1 CET point (Optometrist & Contact Lens Optician). The session will form part of the spectacular Visionaries event, which takes place at London’s Royal College of Surgeons on Monday, November 14, and will include an evening reception for drinks and an extended exhibition from some of the industry’s biggest names.
Official event partners include Alcon,
CooperVision, Menicon, Johnson & Johnson, mark e’nnovy and Topcon.
