Month of activity puts myopia under microscope

Myopia management will be the focus of a month-long series of lectures and education sessions featuring some of the world’s leading experts on the subject.

The topic, arguably the biggest talking point in optometry right now, will be discussed in detail at the BCLA’s Presidential Address by Keith Tempany and will be the focus of the BCLA’s ‘At Your Place’ roadshows in Manchester, Birmingham and London.

It will also shape the content of a dedicated myopia management day to be held at Aston University, featuring some of the profession’s leading lights on the subject from across the world.

Cheryl Donnelly, chief executive of the BCLA, said: “Many of the profession’s most respected opinion leaders are passionate about myopia management and several of them are coming to the UK this month.

“They will present the latest research, explain the latest thinking behind the science and give invaluable hints and tips to ensure you are at the forefront of this potentially revolutionary approach.

“It’s an invaluable opportunity to learn more about an emerging technique and the science and technology that surrounds it.”

The BCLA’s Keith Tempany will devote his eagerly anticipated Presidential Address to the subject of myopia management at the Royal Society of Medicine in London on September 21.

He will look back at the past 40 years and the changing world of contact lenses while looking ahead at new technology and the need to inform the public about the risks of myopia and ways eye care professionals can reduce the rate of its progression.

Aston University is hosting a Myopia Management Day on Wednesday, September 13. Experts including Kate Gifford, Jan Roelof Polling, Gillian Bruce and Katie Harrop will all lead discussion group sessions before a round table discussion featuring representatives from the AOP, the College of Optometrists, the General Optical Council and industry. The event is being supported by the BCLA.

Myopia management experts Kate and Paul Gifford will deliver presentations at BCLA evening meetings in Birmingham, Manchester and London called ‘The facts and future of myopia control’.

The sessions, on September 26, 27 and 28, will give eye care practitioners the opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of how to run a successful children’s contact lens clinic.

A limited number of spaces for these events are being sponsored by CooperVision and Menicon, allowing non BCLA members to attend for free by using the code SPONSOR25 when registering at www.bcla.org.uk.
