PRESENTATION
This talk will run through all the possible technologies in practice used in modern times, with particular attention paid to investigating patients prior to, and during Speciality Contact Lens Fitting.

New advances in topography will be discussed as there are now instruments that are a ‘’one stop’’ option for complete analysis of all aspects of tears/lids and the ocular surface and corneal shape.

There will be discussion on Slit Lamp imaging analysis and image grading and descriptions on the now invaluable OCT and CL fitting capabilities.  Some new innovations in Profilometry will be described and how this now leads to Empirical Fitting for many speciality Contact Lenses.

Learning Objectives
To understand the importance of screening the patient for suitability prior to fitting
To learn the techniques needed to analyse tears and grade potential issues with dry eye
To understand the role of technology and grading scales for comparison and monitoring of dry eye
To review modern empirical fitting of contact lenses.

SPEAKERS

David Berkow qualified as an optometrist in South Africa in 1978 and has been in private practice in Haifa, Israel since qualifying.

David's clinic specialises in general optometry and specialty contact lens fitting.  David completed his Master's Degree at Ulster University in 2012 and in 2021 completed his Doctor of Optometry Degree at Aston University.

David is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, Fellow of The European Academy of Optometry and Optics,  Fellow of The British College of Optometrists, Fellow of The British Contact Lens Association and Fellow of The International Association of Contact Lens Educators.  David lectures extensively both locally and abroad at Optometric Congresses.

Brian Tompkins is a Past President of the BCLA and a former AOP Contact Lens Practitioner of the Year. He is extremely proactive in fitting all types of contact lenses to any age and prescription. He feels that the market for contact lenses can be expanded to many more patients from children to presbyopes and beyond, and many opportunities are currently missed. He has a large CL patient base and is keen on imaging and video capture for enhanced patient education.

He has been awarded the accolade ''One of The Best Clinical Photographers in the World Today'' by Prof Nathan Efron and regularly supplies images for lectures, magazine articles and publications worldwide. His work in contact lenses has included collaborative clinical trials with Eurolens Research, Visioncare Research Ltd and OTG Research & Consultancy.

Brian has been a Key Opinion Leader and Clinical Advisor to virtually all the contact lens manufacturers and many of the technology and instrument companies over the years and has participated in launching many new products into the global market.  He lectures internationally on business, imaging technology, dry eye and contact lens topics, all based on real life experience in the consulting room. Evangelically he has been trying to spread the concept of charging proper fees and business development following the implementation of a Care Plan System in his own practice many years ago.

When voted “Best in Show” at a Bausch & Lomb Global Symposium many years ago, Brian learnt that people retain more by being entertained while being educated and so since that time his lectures and workshops have been interactive and fun, sometimes even hilarious, but always informative.

He is maybe Optometry’s best known EDUTAINER.
