EVENING LECTURE
(19:00 - 20:00)
The BCLA evening lecture 'Cell therapy for corneal disease'  will be presented by Mr Alex J Shortt.

This lecture will focus on the causes of corneal limbal stem cell deficiency, a severe and blinding condition that results from damage to the stem cells that generate the corneal epithelium. The treatment options will then be discussed. These include surgical and non surgical therapies. Finally the role of stem cell technology in treating these patients will be discussed and the current state of research and clinical progress with be presented.

Having been awarded his PhD in 2009 Mr Shortt then completed a 4 year NIHR Clinical Lectureship at the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. Over the past 10 years, Alex’s research has focused on the development of cell therapies for corneal and conjunctival disease.  He has recently commenced a prestigious 4-year Wellcome Trust Clinician Scientist Award investigating the response of the recipient’s immune system to engrafted stem cells.
